Quiver Closeout Crescendo

Okay, I found a few more boards that I need to liquidate to get myself down south to start up the biz for the season.

The first three are the single fin that I was selling previously, a purple people eater quad with LokBox, and a white quad with LokBox.

The single fin is a fun stinger outline with parabolic rails. This is an EPS blank glassed with styrofoam compatible polyester resin. It has great drive and rides the barrel like no other. It turns more like a single fin with side bites than a straight single fin because of the wings and the hard edge up past the wings. Hand tuned a mistake blank from Ezera cut off the machine and glassed myself.
DIMS: 6'2" N 12.5" W 18.5" T 11.5" 2.25" THICK

The purple people eater quad is a board I've had lot's of fun on. I like this board for beach breaks. It's been ridden very few times and is water tight . I hand shaped and glassed this board. It is polyurethane blank with polyester resin.
DIMS: 5'7" N 13" W 18.5" T 13.75" 2.25 THICK

The white quad I prefer on bigger days at reefs or points. It comes with a D-Surf mini kick pad to stop you from sliding your foot off the back of the board. This board has great float for paddle battling with the crowds. It's rocker handles hollow waves and it's double to single concave out the fins gives the board a lot of speed to make all kinds of sections. This is a bigger board for me so it could accommodate a bigger guy. This is an Ice-9 second blank with Rexin-x glass job. The Ice-9 blank has some shrinkage going on but it appears to have stabilized. The shrinkage has not affected the ride at all. I hand shaped and glassed this board as well
DIMS: 6'0" N 12" W 19" T 14" 2.25" THICK

All these boards were shaped and glassed by me. I have ridden them on some great waves and had tons of fun on all of them. they are in good water tight condition. The single fin has some delam on the deck and a tiny bit on the bottom from a gassy blank, but it is water tight and the delam doesn't affect the ride. I'm asking $150 each if bought individually or $390 for all three.

Next is an almost new ridden very few times Akila Aipa twin fin with a traction pad. This board is water tight and light. It has a crisp edge for amazing rail control. It has nice MR style fins for positive turns with no sliding out as long as you keep it on rail. I'd ride this board any day from 3 to 8 feet. $325

Tonight was about to be a bummer. All day I looked forward to a surf. I was dirty from yardwork and was looking to clear my mind and wash off the filth with a few waves. I took out the one board I had left in my quiver that would work for today's conditions, my new Marlin Bacon California quad with bamboo fins the whole board glassed with Resin-X. I got to the spot and it looked like a fun high tide wind swell. The reef wasn't breaking but the inside beachbreak playground had some little ones that raced into some fun end sections. I paddled out and caught a few. The board was working great. I was a little rusty due to all the work in the yard plus, as my wife would say, " A... G... E". She would spell it out just like that for emphasis. I love her Chilena sense of humor. Apart from the slow start, I felt pretty good with the session, when a very fun right rolled in. I paddled for it and saw a guy down the line paddling in, going for the poach. I yelled "RIGHT" at a decibel level I believed loud enough for him to hear. He kept paddling. I stood up and made my turn about mid face to squirt down the line. I was pretty sure he saw or at least heard me, but apparently not. He stood up and was in the process of drawing out a bottom turn when I got up to him. Within about 5 feet of him I yelled "RIGHT!" That must have startled him because his board shot out from under him and back at me, slipping right under neath the nose of my now speeding board. That stopped my board and I jumped to miss landing on top of the whole mess. I swam to get my board. When I got to it I saw the damage. It had broken my outside bamboo fin off. It was gone. I paddled back out to the guy and told him that I would have to ask him to pony up some dough for the repair. I thought $40 bucks would be a fair amount since I will fix it my self and have access to the materials. At first I was afraid he wasn't going to do the right thing. He started talking about not hearing me and that he thought I was going left. I called B#))$#!* on that and went off the handle. I started to lose it and yell. I had to calm myself down and I told him that I was going to get the money from him or file small claims to uphold the principle. It was a half-hearted threat because I could see that he was sorry and that he wanted to do the right thing. Some other guy paddled up while I was ranting and tried to play advocate. I told he didn't know what he was talking about and to go away. Finally the wave poacher gave in and broke down to do what's right and cough up the cash. I surfed the board like that until the sun went down. This guy was good enough to tell me he was going in and that he would go to the ATM to get money to pay me. I went with him to the 7-eleven. I told him to just give me $20 to cover some of the cost of the bamboo replacement that I would have to buy from Marlin. He seemed impressed that I had asked for so little money and that I had apologized for losing my temper and calling him a liar. With that impression he gave $30 instead of the $20 that I had just reduced the request to. With that I have most of the money to get a replacement bamboo fin to repair it with. I guess the board bash was a bummer but the act of brotherhood will shine away the darkness of the damage to my magic Marlin California quad.

Capital Conversion

first up for those small fun days and beginner surfers is a J & L Soft board. This board is stable fun and safe $60 bucks
Next is my 5'7" Campbell Bros. Octafish Bonzer 5 fin all bamboo glassons. This board goes insane 2 to 10 feet surf. $225

Fun 6 foot single fin stinger with parabolic stringers or rail stringers. This is a styro blanks glassed with a new styro compatible polyester. It has carbon graphite in the tail for extra strength. It loves the tube. $170

Next up DK flex tail quad with foam core super light fins. this 5'5" has great foam distribution and paddles like a board a full half a foot longer. It has all the down the line speed you could imagine and the ability to blast straight vert into the lip. The disappearing stringer liven the back half of this board up and gives it all sorts of kick down the line. $200

New To Me Surf Forum

Hey I found a new to me forum. Global Surfers Forum is a nice layout with several users. It's not as packed as the SurferMag erbb. That might be a good thing though. Not as many trolls. I'll be trolling it for a while to see how I like the vibe over there. So far so good.

This board was shaped by my dad, outline drawn by Peter St. Pierre and Racing stripes by him as well. I cut out the outline and trued the rails. My dad rockered it out and turned the rails. I surfed it this summer in my favorite point break and it was custom fit for the tube. Stand trim and park under the lip.

It is no pop out fun. I love riding a board that has so much soul.

Mateo Tide Calendars

My friend Mateo down south has some amazing talents. These are hand drawn psychosubtropical land and surfscapes he has made into tide calendars.

He hand draws the masters and then prints a limited number of copies.

Mateo's surfing was featured in the Seedling along with Brittany Quinn. His art and Brittany's camera genius are featured in their underground surf film which predated Campbell's Seedling. Anyone who gets a chance to witness their film Fine Flow will know that their combined muses are overwhelming.

Surf is a life for these two extraordinary humans. Mateo's tide calendars give the tides for San Diego and some parts of Southern Baja. Each drawing is transporting and the line work is a style that allows your mind to color and animate each lineup.

I brought twelve of these back with me from my last trip down south. They will make great Christmas gifts. Call me, text me, email me if you would like to buy one and I will work out the payment and mailing with you over the phone. Please provide me with your phone number so I can call you back.

Here are the next steps on Eric's board. the first two photos are of the sealed deck with the laminated bottom free lapped onto the deck.

Below is a photo of the completely laminated board with the hot coat on the deck.

Tomorrow will be finbox time.

The lamination was a test of my patience and perserverance. First the bottom, I didn't mix up enough and got left high and dry when it came time to wet out the laps. I taped it off and put a band of white of the lap to cover up any of the crystallized or dry cloth. It worked out well. The deck was equally trying since I didn't know for sure if I could thin the resin since it is an EPS blank. I was worried that the reducer would react badly with the EPS. So I did it straight out of the bucket. I mixed enough of the resin this time. The only proble was that it kicked too soon. I wasn't able to sufficiently pull out enough resin and I got a bit of a wobbly deck lamination. to fix that I just sand the board before I hotcoated it to flatten it out.

I'll be doing a wetsanded gloss finish on this board. That should afford me enough coats to sand to get out the lumps. I spoke with Matt and he told me that Xylene will make the resin thin enough and retard the reaction time without causing problems to the EPS. I don't know exactly how much to use to thin it out, but I will be experimenting with the hot and glosss coats.

Replica Shape Finished

I got all stoked on shaping another board. So last night I pumped this one out. First you have pics of the rocker of the original board and the pic below that is of the new board I shaped.

The rocker is really close to the same especially throughout the body of the board and the tail. I did add a little nose kick to get out of those late takeoff situations Eric might get into because he's riding a smaller board now.

Here are the comparison pics of the outlines. I'm well pleased on how it turned out. It's six inches shorter and a bit more narrow.

Here's a shot of the rails side by side. This was the part that I took the most care in replicating. It is the part that I think a good surfer gets the most used to. This is the part of the board that is engage the wave when you stick the board on it's edge in a good turn. Eric is a good surfer and can crank some powerful turns. I know that he is used to this board and will be able to tell the difference if I didn't get the rail spot on. Over all I'm well pleased with how the whole shape came out. now time to glass.

I've been working on getting a blank to replicate a board for my bro. Eric Monroe. I finally got one from Marko Foam and now the template from his old board is ready. All I need now is for him to bring his old board over and we're ready to mow foam.

Here is the template. The top side is the nose curve and the bottom is the tail curve. This is the outline of a Tony Staples Trestles Special. Eric wants it a little shorter since he's dropped some lbs and is surfing a lot more these days. He wanted it done with EPS for the bouyancy and weight advantages. I'll be glassing with Resin_X.

This board is one that my dad made when he owned Ocean Pacific Surfboards back in the late '60's'. This is a banjo tail "V" bottom. I traced the template off this one and I'll be shaping one for Sara. Her first surfboard.

Sick Rest

I was ill before my last trip down south to the shop and cafe. I pushed it a little too hard down there and worked and surfed myself a little sicker. The bacteria rested into my sinuses and lungs. I've been coughing for a week straight and trying to get the junk out. I've only had enough energy to take care of my obligations at the Moonbase.

I have two friends that want me to shape boards for them and another board that I am making as a trade for a classic 70's collectible. Fortunately, since I am sick, the blank for one has not been delivered the other two are no rush. I need to get my mojo back before I can jump back into the "Blue Room"

I haven't even been able to get in the water. Fortunately the water has warmed and there hasn't been alot of swell. Looks like this week around Thursday we should get something so I'll be trying to get ready for that.

She is as talented as they come. No offense to my pop, but my genetic gifts come from mom. Dad taught me the work ethic. Mom made the work easy to do. Her artistic touches show up in her photography. Below is a sunset photo she snapped with the silhoutted desert flora. She has an eye for magnificence.

She is spontaneous and fun. I'm so glad that she's helping my dad and I get the shop rolling down in San Juanico.

Mass Transit Friendly Boards

I've been riding mass transit since I am home most of this summer. I am only heading down to our surf shop/internet cafe once a month this year instead of all summer. I am doing a lot more work at the Moonbase and I've picked up some other surfboard work in the O-Side Surf Ghetto. I'll be shaping a lot more also. I have two orders that I'll be finishing this week and I have a longboard that I'll be shaping to exchange with a guy I know for a classic Ben Aipa Stinger. The goal is to start making a little more income doing surf work here so I've decreased my expenditures with the mass transit.

The key to mass transit is that you have to leave early and get home late. To do that I pack up the backpack and grab the skateboard and a surfboard under 6' long (that's the limit) and I leave around 5:00 am. I'll get all my work done and then ride down to the beach for a quick session to get on the last bus going home. I sometimes don't get home until 10:30 pm. I am stoked to do it because it gets me out of the house to work on stuff I love regardless of how many hours I'm roaming around on the public transit.

The picture was shot at 10:00 pm after a long day of surf work and surf.

I just got done working with mom and dad on our surf shop internet cafe project down in Baja. It is a great feeling to be able to work with family. My mom is running a new blog for the shop "Waazzzappenin' San Juanico"

I can't wait for next month when Sara will go down with me and we'll all 4 work on the project. I got a little surf and a lot done and a lot of fun. Now back to Moonbase to make more boards and prepare for the 1st week in June

Dave Martin was and unfortunate victim of an illness our society is suffering from. The seals have plenty of habitat on the islands and isolated points of land around California. We don't need to give them Kiddie Pool as a breeding ground in La jolla. Why attract more food source for this sharks? All we're doing is increasing the probability of another tragedy. Start to finish in 5 days. I did every step with some guidance from the Moon Unit pros. So stoked on this one. I wanted to surf it tonight but I got it done just a little too late. Tomorrow a.m. I'm on it. It's all waxed up and ready for it's test swim.

Dims: 6'0" x 12" 19"x 14" x 2&7/8 Lot's of rocker in the tail. Bottom contour: forward V to spiral V to single concave out the tail. Domed deck to hide the beef in the center and keep the rails high performance.

Surf Artist and Documentarian

Over the past two years I have had the chance to meet and start a friendship with this surf artist and documentarian Greg Weaver. Alot of people get him mixed up with the famous skateboarder Greg Weaver, but this is actually the guy that would have filmed him.

Some of his camera work you may recognize:

water camera work on work such as The Forgotten Island of Santosha, The Stylemasters, Chasing the Lotus and the Wave Warriors series and some Billabong surf vids, among many others.

Last summer my wife Sara and I stopped him for a photo op.

I've been trying to work with the photos that I have on my computer. My Olympus blew up. I had used it for awhile in the Sea of Cortez while snorkeling. I dove down to just about 12 feet to shoot a pic of a Stop Light Parrot fish ,

and when I went to the surface to check it out I saw water bubling around in my screen. I'm not sure what happened to my seal but that cam is supposed to be able to function down to 33 feet. So it is in the shop getting it's warranty fix-up or replacement. I have the replacement of my Pentax Optio that i handed off to my wife but she's hidden the USB cable and I have to find it so I can put up some more recent pics. Let this suffice for now.

I am just groovin with this board right now. The first times I took it out it didn't work well for me. Then I got it in some quality waves and found the go pedal now it's on. For being only a 5'6'' it paddles well and generates speed where other boards flounder.

The Popout Bandit is riding this board that is under the guy- that looks kinda like Rob70-'s arm in this photo. He has it for the next 2 weeks to get it dialed and then he'll be riding it for a filming sesh at Windansea for Hydrodynamica. He called me up yesterday and we hooked up for a lunch break surf and I rode about a half dozen waves on this board. It caught waves insane and had unprecedented glide. Tons of Fun! I'll probably bug him to surf again this weekend.

This board is my 8th shape. I did all the glass work myself. It is my own template. It is a swallow tail with the wide point a bit forward of center and a more pulled in nose and tail than traditional fish boards. It's 5'7" by 19 and 1/2 inches wide by 2 and 3/8 inches thick with a nose width of 13 and 1/2 inches and a tail width of 15 inches. The quad setup are all glass-on bamboo fins by 101 fin company. The bottom contour is "V" under the front foot with concave built into the plane from stringer to rail. I've heard this configuration called spiral "V". Back just before the fins the spiral "V" converges into a single concave and continues out the tail. The rails are thin and give the board plenty of drive in the turns while being shaped with a forgiving curve. They don't bite when you bury the rail in a turn. I've surfed it on a pretty slow day at a North County reef and found that rail to rail with my foot over the front fins it went well through the flat spots. When I had some speed and wanted to hit the lip I just moved my foot over the back fins and had all the drive and control I needed from the board.
